Being a commercial truck driver can take its toll on your health and wellness. Not only are you often away from home for weeks at a time, but a lot of your work is sedentary and takes place in shifts. Here are a few tips to stay healthy on the road:
Eat healthy
It’s common for truck drivers to buy their food and beverages at fast food venues at truck stops. Unfortunately, not all fast food is healthy. Too many high-fat, high-sugar meals, energy drinks, and cups of coffee will affect your health. While many truck stops do offer healthy food and beverage options, it’s also a good idea to plan for healthy snacks that you can take with you. Don’t rely on caffeine to keep you going: stay hydrated with bottled water and stay energized with nuts, fruit, and other healthy snacks.
Make exercise a priority
It’s not always possible to get to a gym if you are on the road a lot. Some truck drivers carry running shoes, small weights and even folding bicycles to use on the road. If you have 12 hours off, make exercise a priority and go for a walk or run, lift a few weights, or go for a bike ride.
Buy a quality portable mattress and pillow
It’s hard to get a good night’s sleep if you don’t have a comfortable bed or if you are in a new environment every other night. If you sleep in your cab, invest in a good-quality mattress and pillow so that you can get a good night’s sleep wherever you are.
Keep your mind busy
You can keep your mind active and engaged by listening to audio books, interesting music or even learning a new language while you are driving.
